Nokia N8 usage: TV out in two ways

One function of the Nokia N8 that is only found in a few other smartphones, like the HTC EVO 4G I have, is the ability to connect to an HDMI cable for TV out functionality. Did you also know that the traditional method of using the 3.5mm headset jack and the Nokia three color A/V cable works just fine as well?

HDMI

While I had to buy a special micro HDMI cable to connect my EVO 4G, Nokia makes this drop dead easy by including a 6 inch adapter cable that connects to your N8 HDMI port with a standard HDMI female port on the other end. In addition to providing the adapter you need, the Nokia N8 supports sending everything on the display out through the HDMI port while Android is specific to certain applications. I also found that playing video, such as the National Geographic channel, gives you media controls right on the display so you can control the video that is playing out on your TV.

3.5mm A/V cable

I have a few Nokia 3.5mm to A/V cables lying around so I grabbed one and plugged it into the N8 headset jack and my TV. It worked just fine so if you do not have an HDMI port on your TV you can still connect your Nokia N8 to your TV for TV out functionality.

Some may wonder why you would practically ever use this functionality, but I know with the awesome camera and video capture capabilities that I will be using it to show photos and videos to family and friends this holiday season with everything controlled right from my N8. The photos I took today looked fantastic out on my HD TV with the HDMI port and this ability will actually encourage me to take more photos to share with the Nokia N8.

You can also use your N8 as the computer brains behind a setup where you have TV out and a Bluetooth or USB keyboard connected for a mobile office on the go.
